How to React After A Crash

Getting in a small accident or fender bender can be frightening. But it’s important that you stay calm and focused.

Start by making sure that everyone is okay. Then, have all involved parties get to a safe location, such as the shoulder of the road or a nearby parking lot. Once everyone is there, take the following steps to make sure that the process goes as smoothly as possible.

Step 1: Get out of your vehicle and provide assistance to anyone who is injured. (Keeping a first-aid kit in your car can be helpful. Learn how to create your own here.)

Step 2: Call the police or highway patrol immediately. Take notice of the nearest cross streets so you’re able to clearly communicate exactly where you are.

Step 3: Take photographs of your damaged vehicle and the scene. Note the date and time that the images were taken. This will be helpful when filing your claim with your insurance company as well as for the police report.

Step 4: Once the police arrive, give them as much information as you can about what occurred. Do not admit fault; simply give the facts. Before leaving, ask the investigating officer how to obtain a copy of the police report, as you may have to submit it with your insurance claim.

Step 5:  Take as many notes and write down as many details as you can remember about the accident, and then call Nella Insurance Services to report your claim. Keep all records of correspondence that you have regarding your claim, including the date, name, and title of the person that you talked to about the accident. Also, keep a record of any expenses that you incurred as a result of the accident. Depending on your policy, you may be entitled to reimbursement for those expenses.

(Most Important) Step 6: DO NOT leave the accident without gathering all of the following information; name, address and phone number for each person involved, description of each car as well as the license plate, vehicle identification number, and the name of their auto insurance company.
